PPAG

What we do

Promoting
Potentials of
Adolescent Girls (PPAG)

This is a gender & health based program for empowering girls to realize their potentials.

It targets the adolescent girls (aged 10-17) who are in transition phase from childhood to adulthood in which they experience physical, behavioural, psychological, emotional and social changes. At this stage many girls get pregnancy and face severe consequences which impact their lives negatively. They face stigma or rejection from their parents, community and peers, burden of care that accompanies childbirth, end of education and job prospects and vulnerability to poverty. This problem is caused by lack of knowledge, life skills and supportive environment. The program seeks to address these issues to ensure healthy and positive transition to adulthood. On one hand the target group shall be engaged in awareness raising, knowledge dissemination and life skills to build their capacity to manage the changes and focus on positive future life; on the other hand the stakeholders will be sensitized to respond to girls’ needs for their development. The project shoulders 4 components: education; mentoring and counselling; policy dialogue and campaign; networking and collaboration with other actors. It will be implemented in the Northern Tanzania particularly Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara regions focusing on 12 secondary schools. About 6,000 girls in the target schools are expected to benefit directly from the project.

The project contributes to the national and global goals related to child health, gender equality, and universal education. Precisely it will complement the national adolescent health and development strategy 2018 – 2022 which aims to promote adolescent health and wellbeing; women development and gender policy aiming to ensure that the gender perspective is mainstreamed into all sectors, programmes and strategies; and child development policy whose mission is to provide children their rights, welfare and development. Globally the project is linked to goal number three to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; goal number 4 to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; goal number 5 to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Goal
Goal of this project is reduction of adolescent pregnancies through knowledge, life skills and safe environment.
Purpose
The purpose is to have empowered young girls aiming at decent career.
Expected outcomes/deliverables
  1. Improved knowledge and skills on physical, behavioural, psychological, emotional and social growth changes to the young girls.
  2. Improved awareness of Children’s rights, laws and instruments that protect them.

Four components are integrated in the project: education; mentoring and counselling; policy dialogue and campaign; networking and collaboration with other actors.
