Gender inequality is globally acknowledged as major obstacle to socio-economic and political development of people.
In Tanzania, women and girls are discriminated, segregated and ignored in terms of participation in decision making practices and access to their gender needs including appropriate health care and services. They are not free to fully exercise and enjoy their rights equally with others due to lack of knowledge on their rights, fear of violence and unsafe environment. They experience various forms of violence including physical, sexual, economic, emotional violence, and they are generally insecure inferior.
Women and girls are still perceived as weak, passive and inferior human beings in the society. This attitude is contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which declares freedom, equality and dignity to all people and is ratified by the government of Tanzania.
Gender equality is the heart of WEGS work. We advocate for change of attitude, behavior and practices to women and girls focusing on: Human rights education; Capacity building to public and private entities to mainstream gender in their programs and plans; and Civic education. This program is executed through campaign, policy dialogue, awareness creation, education and skills training.
